Other Inflammatory Diseases
Inflammation is a natural part of the body’s defense system. It can become chronic when acute inflammation does not subside but persists, putting the body into a lasting inflammatory state. A large number of different conditions are to varying degrees related to chronic inflammation, such as rheumatic diseases, diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain types of cancer. There is generally a growing need for safer and more effective treatment for patients suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases.
Lipum has chosen to focus its development on the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) as a model indication for various chronic inflammatory diseases. RA is the most common of the approximately 100 different rheumatic diseases, and in 2020, an estimated 18 million people were affected globally. The related disease Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), which affects children and adolescents, is much rarer, but it can also lead to lifelong disability and significantly impaired quality of life.
